Calming the Storm

Music is medicine to a young man fettered by the turmoil in his mind. It tames the voices.

"Since the article came out, Vincent House inspired me to go to college and study Music and Arts Technology.  The skills I’ve learned here at Vincent House, I’ve utilized and applied them to my everyday studies and life.  Last year I bought a home in St. Petersburg where I build upon the things I’ve developed at Vincent House.  This year my life was blessed with the birth of my beautiful daughter Melody Reign Shea.  Without Vincent House and all the members and staff, my life and my future would not be possible."   Justin Shea

When every day at work is payday

This past spring, about the time Ed Wohlford joined Vincent House, it launched a program called "Transitional Employment."  Members earn the right to hold part-time jobs by becoming members of the Recovery Through Work Partnership. Paid employment gives them the chance to rejoin the mainstream of society.

“Well I came to Vincent House because; I didn’t like the Drop-in Center or the day treatment program anymore. What I like about Vincent House is the Founders Elliott and Dianne Steele. Since becoming a Member I learned to run a camcorder and photocopier. I'm a lunch waiter and also clean bathrooms... I'm proud of that, because no one can clean a bathroom better than me! I’ve been to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Fourteenth International Clubhouse Seminar. I even met the Mayor, Fire Chief, and Police Chief of Pinellas Park… I am a lot happier now than I have ever been before!”                                   -Malcolm Campbell

“When I first came to Vincent House I was reluctant and mis-believing. I have been through a ‘whirlwind’ of circumstances my plan after High School was to enlist in the Armed Services. I’ve been through several recruiters, who all turned me down; I was crushed. Thanks to Vincent House I have a new lease on life…” Hopefully in a few years I will be working as a law-enforcement officer. A wise man once told me if I put my mind to it my goals can be accomplished... ” -  Carla McPherson

“I found out from my Case Manager that Vincent House could help me with my vision and hearing loss as well as my mental illness, even though it’s been a ‘triple whammy.’ I have discovered that I can contribute to society even if it is in a limited way. I really feel that the people are great and I’m a part of it here. I don’t feel like an outcast, I feel like part of a team. When I walk in the smiles just brightens my day.”    - Kaye Shakeshaft

“August 2002; I lost everything I owned in the span of on week. A broken man with no where to go; I lost my will to live … respect for Samurai tradition... was a death sentence. Going to Vincent House; February 2003 saved my life. It was the early days … we used two coolers for refrigerators and a gas grill for cooking. Members and Staff believed in me then… the way they believe in me today… they all make me feel special... I’m sorry I can’t say more…”
